Mutations are the special variants that turn an ordinary dumpling into a prize. In Trade Squishy Dumplings, a mutated dumpling is much rarer than its normal version, and that scarcity makes it worth far more when you trade. Understanding mutations — how to recognise them, value them, and protect them — is one of the biggest edges a trader can have.
What a mutation is
A mutation is an alternative form of a dumpling that appears much less frequently than the standard version. The base dumpling might be common, but its mutated form is rare on top of that, because the mutation is applied only occasionally. Think of it as two layers of rarity stacked together: the dumpling’s own tier, plus the rarity of the mutation itself.
That stacking is exactly why mutations matter so much. A dumpling that would be ordinary on its own becomes genuinely desirable once mutated, because very few players will ever own that exact mutated version.
Why mutations are so valuable
On the value list, a mutation lifts a dumpling at least one full tier, often more. The logic is simple: value comes from rarity multiplied by demand, and a mutation boosts both. It is rarer, and players actively want mutated versions to stand out and complete special parts of their collection.
This makes mutated dumplings some of the best trade-up targets in the game. If you can acquire one, it becomes a powerful bargaining chip on the trading board. And if you pull one yourself, you are holding something many players cannot easily obtain — treat it accordingly.
How to get a mutated dumpling
Because mutations are rare by design, there is no guaranteed method, but you can improve your chances:
- Play with luck boosts active. If you have a luck boost from a code or reward, use it during a focused session to nudge the odds in your favour. The same logic in how to find rare dumplings applies here.
- Play consistently. More dumplings obtained means more chances for a mutation to appear.
- Trade for one directly. Often the most reliable route is to trade up the rarities ladder until you can fairly offer enough for a mutated dumpling that another player already has.
Protecting your mutations when trading
A mutated dumpling is exactly the kind of item scammers target, so handle it with care:
- Always confirm the mutation in the trade window. Verify your own item is correctly recognised as mutated, and check whether a partner’s “mutated” item really is, before you move onto the check mark.
- Never trade a mutation as if it were normal. This is the most common way players lose a grail. Check the value list so you know its true tier.
- Watch for the fake-mutation trick. Some scammers claim a plain dumpling is mutated to inflate its apparent value. Our scam protection guide covers this and the other tactics in full.
- Trade high-value mutations with trusted partners. Arranging a swap with someone you know, meeting at a trading board together, removes most of the risk.
Mutations and your collection
For collectors, mutations add a whole extra layer of goals. Completing the normal set is one challenge; tracking down mutated versions of your favourites is the long-term chase that keeps the game rewarding. Record mutations separately in your dumpling list, since each mutated version is effectively its own rare item. When you are working toward a complete collection, how to complete your collection explains how to prioritise mutations alongside the dumplings you still need.
Master mutations and you master the top of the economy. They are the rarest, most wanted items in the game — get one, value it correctly, and guard it well.
